YOUTUBE UNIVERSITY / FREE INTRODUCTORY COURSE

Your first video

Five practical lessons to take you from an idea to your first video. You will need a phone or camera, an editing tool of your choice, and some time to practise. This guide works offline; use your browser's print function to print it or save it as a PDF.

1. Find your topic and audience

Choose one specific question your video will answer. For example, instead of “everything about gaming”, try “how to build your first defensive line in a tower defence game”. Define your viewer's experience and the problem they want to solve.

2. Write a simple script

Start with what the viewer will gain. Divide the main section into three points. Add a demonstration for each point. Finish by briefly repeating the key idea and suggesting one next step.

3. Set up your frame, light, and sound

Clean your phone lens. Record horizontally for a longer landscape video, or vertically for a vertical short. Position the camera steadily at eye level. Face a window rather than standing with it behind you. Record in a quiet room and test the sound.

4. Edit a clear story

Arrange your clips in script order. Cut mistakes and pauses that do not help the viewer understand. Do not replace clear storytelling with excessive effects. Only use music when you have the appropriate rights, and keep it below your voice.

5. Publish and review

Choose a specific title that matches the video. Use one main idea and readable text in the thumbnail. Explain the topic and credit your sources in the description. Check visibility and audience settings before publishing.

Before publishing

A good next step: repeat the process with a second topic and improve one specific skill.
